Now let's go step by step.

How to design a Promotional Flier for Social Media

Step 1: Create a New Document

Open Adobe Illustrator and go to File → New.

Set the document size to:

  • Width: 1080 pixels

  • Height: 1080 pixels

Set the color mode to RGB, then click Create.

This square format works perfectly for Instagram posts and social media advertisements.

Step 2: Create the Background

Select the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle that covers the entire artboard.

Open the Gradient Panel and apply a gradient fill.

Set:

Color 1: #FFD84D
Color 2: #F7B500

Use the Gradient Tool to adjust the gradient direction so the yellow tones blend smoothly across the background.

This creates the bright promotional look used in retail advertising.

Step 3: Add the Light Rays

Next, we will add the light rays to create a dynamic background.

Go to File → Place and import the light rays graphic.

Resize it so it covers the entire artboard.

Then reduce the Opacity to around 30–40% so the rays remain subtle.

Finally go to:

Object → Arrange → Send to Back

This gives the background a sunburst promotional effect.

Step 4: Create the Promotional Banner Shape

Select the Ellipse Tool and draw a large circle near the top of the artboard. Change the fill color to:

#E91E63

To make the shape more organic:

Go to Effect → Distort & Transform → Roughen

Adjust the settings slightly to create a soft promotional blob shape.

Next, draw a smaller circle below the shape and fill it with black. This will hold the pack size text.

Step 5: Add the Headline Text

Select the Type Tool and type:

Stock Up On Your Favorite Cooking Oil

Use a bold font such as Montserrat Bold or Poppins Bold.

Set the text color to white and center it inside the pink banner shape.

Step 6: Add the Product Name

Below the headline, add the product name:

Excella Cooking Oil
Sunflower

Increase the font size and make the text bold so it becomes the main headline of the promotion.

Step 7: Add the Pack Size Label

Inside the black circle, type: 375 ML x 12

Change the text color to yellow so it stands out clearly against the black background.

Step 8: Place the Character Image

Go to File → Place and import the character image.

Position the image on the bottom left side of the design.

Resize the character so it becomes a strong visual element that leads the viewer’s attention toward the product.

You can optionally add a subtle shadow using:

Effect → Stylize → Drop Shadow

Step 9: Place the Product Bottle

Next, import the product image.

Go to File → Place and select the Excella Sunflower Oil bottle image.

Position the bottle on the right side of the design and scale it larger so the product becomes the main focal point.

Step 10: Create the Promotional Price Tag

Add the old price text:

Was R173.00

Draw a line across the price to indicate the discount.

Next draw a rectangle below the price.

Fill the rectangle with:

#E91E63

Now type the new price inside the rectangle:

NOW R165.00

Change the text color to white and make it bold.

Step 11: Add the Logo

Finally, place the company logo.

Go to File → Place and import the logo.

Position it neatly in the top right corner of the design.

Step 12: Final Adjustments

Review the layout and adjust spacing if needed.

Make sure:

  • The product bottle is clearly visible

  • The promotion text stands out

  • The layout is balanced

Once everything looks good, your promotional poster is complete.
