How to Register a Business Name in Kenya

By Denis Maina

So, you’ve got this brilliant business idea—maybe a killer online clothing store, a cozy little cafĂ©, or a tech startup that’ll shake things up. You’ve planned everything down to the last detail, but there’s one little problem... your business isn’t legally recognized yet.

That’s where business name registration comes in. It’s your golden ticket to legitimacy. Registering your business gives you credibility, makes it easier to access funding, and keeps you on the right side of the law. And lucky for you, Kenya’s business registration process is fully online—no queuing in government offices.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to register your business name step-by-step on eCitizen using the Business Registration Service (BRS).

BRS vs eCitizen (What’s the Difference?)

eCitizen is the government’s main online portal where all services are accessed.

BRS (Business Registration Service) is the platform inside eCitizen where you register and manage all business-related applications.

Think of it this way:

  • eCitizen = the main gate
  • BRS = the office where registration happens

Step 1: Check if Your Business Name Is Available

Your name must be unique and not already taken. To check availability:

  1. Go to eCitizen and log in.
  2. Open the Business Registration Service (BRS).
  3. Search your preferred business name.

If it’s taken, tweak it and try again. Avoid overly generic names like “Best Supplies.”

Step 2: Create an eCitizen Account

If you don’t already have one:

  1. Visit eCitizen and click Sign Up.
  2. Select Kenyan Citizen and enter your ID number.
  3. Fill in your details and verify your email and phone.

Step 3: Reserve Your Business Name

To reserve your name:

  1. Log into eCitizen → BRS.
  2. Select Name Search & Reservation.
  3. Enter up to three preferred names.
  4. Choose your business type (sole proprietorship, partnership, etc.).
  5. Pay the reservation fee (about KSh 150).

Approval takes around 1–2 days.

Step 4: Fill Out the Business Registration Forms

You will enter:

  • Business name
  • Nature of business
  • Physical location
  • Ownership type
  • Your ID number, KRA PIN, and contacts

You must upload:

  • ID copy
  • KRA PIN certificate
  • Passport photo (for proprietors)

Step 5: Pay the Registration Fee

Registration costs around KSh 950–1,000 depending on charges.

You can pay via:

  • M-Pesa
  • Bank deposit
  • Card payment

Step 6: Submit & Wait for Approval

Processing takes 3–5 working days.

Once approved, download your certificate from your eCitizen dashboard.
